Upstart co-founder Dave Girouard. The lender he started filed record third-quarter revenue on Monday and cut its full-year adjusted EBITDA guide by $34 million.

Upstart+1.83% — Upstart, up 1.83 percent today, the AI lending marketplace that underwrites loans for more than 100 banks and credit unions, filed its 8-K this morning with the best quarter in its history: $371 million of revenue, up 34% from a year ago, and a record $218 million of contribution profit at a 60% margin 1. Its auto and home products turned profitable a quarter ahead of plan, swinging to a positive 17% contribution margin from negative 179% a year earlier 1.

Q3 revenue of $371 million is Upstart's biggest quarter yet, up 34% in a year

The same filing cut the year: full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance of about $260 million, down from the $294 million guided in August, and total revenue of about $1.35 billion against a Street consensus of $1.42 billion 123.

The guide leaves $53 million for the fourth quarter

The arithmetic is the story. First half EBITDA was $117.4 million and the third quarter added $89.3 million, so the new full-year guide leaves roughly $53 million for the fourth quarter 14. Analysts had pencilled in $93.9 million there, which makes the implied quarter about 43% below consensus 4. StreetInsider's earnings wire carried the whole reversal in one line: tops Q3 EPS by 12 cents, offers guidance 3.

The macro gauge moved the wrong way the same morning

Alongside earnings, Upstart published October originations of $1,249.2 million, or $48.1 million per funding day, down from $53.1 million per day in September 45. Its Upstart Macro Index, a gauge of credit-loss risk baked into its underwriting, rose to 1.53 from 1.49, about 53% above what the company calls a normal economy 5.

The revenue guide is a forecast of consumer credit, and the gauge says conditions are tightening. The bears' other exhibits were already on file: $1.6 billion of net debt, and partner bank FinWise saying Upstart's contribution had become immaterial 47. "Macro is putting pressure on our near-term outlook," CEO Paul Gu said in the release 1.

Two camps, one filing

Bulls see the records: secured lending profitable early, contribution margin at 60%, and a stock at 7.6 times forward earnings that closed Monday at $21.31, a fresh 52-week low 146. Bears see a guide the Street must still cut, with Q4 implied 43% below its number 4.

This coverage followed the founders' buying of the falling stock on October 15 and the short interest and bond-cushion story on October 10; what is new today is the cut itself 89. The next reading that settles it: whether management commits funding capital or trims the fourth-quarter guide again when it faces analysts this morning.
