ADP raised its profit outlook on AI cost cuts as its own data shows hiring at 16,750 jobs a week
The payroll processor beat and raised on the same morning its own data showed US private hiring at 16,750 jobs a week. The raise rests on float income and machines doing service work, not on more workers being paid.

ADP+0.18% — ADP, up 0.18 percent today processes the paychecks of more than 1.1 million clients across 140 countries, and it bills for every worker paid 3. On October 28, the day it reported fiscal first-quarter earnings, its chief executive, Maria Black, put a number on what its machines are now doing: more than 4,400 AI-run recruiting interviews completed since the start of September, cutting interview-related time spent by 75%, over half of them after business hours 1. The company's AI service platform, The Zone, reached 60% of its service population, up from 48% at the end of fiscal 2026 1. About 50 AI agents are generally available, and the ADP Assist assistant added 100,000 clients since fiscal Q4 1.

In downmarket payroll, where The Zone is fully deployed among service associates, contacts per client fell 7% year over year, after an 8% fall in fiscal 2026 1.
The beat, and the raise
Chief financial officer Peter Hadley reported revenue of $5.49 billion, up 6% and ahead of the $5.48 billion analyst average, and adjusted earnings per share of $2.82, up 13% and above the $2.77 estimate 12. GAAP net income rose to $1.13 billion, or $2.83 a share, from $1.01 billion, or $2.49 2.
ADP raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS growth guidance to 10% to 12%, from 9% to 11%, worth $12.45 at the high end against a street figure of $12.26 2. The raise rests partly on money rather than work: client-funds interest revenue, the yield on the tax deposits ADP holds, grew 15%, and the full-year forecast was lifted $50 million to $1.59 billion to $1.61 billion at about a 3.8% average yield 1. The market's verdict on the beat-and-raise was a 2.64% fall to $285.37 2.
The complication: the thing ADP bills on is not growing
Pays per control, the paychecks the company charges on, grew 2% in the quarter, and the full-year forecast is roughly 1% growth 1. Hadley described the employment backdrop as a "relatively low hire, low fire environment" 1. ADP's own research arm agrees: its NER Pulse, the weekly reading behind its monthly National Employment Report, showed US private hiring averaging 16,750 jobs a week in the four weeks ending October 10, down from 26,000 in late September, the second straight weekly slowdown 3.

Strip out float income and the AI cost cuts and the quarter looks thin, which is the argument the guidance is quietly making. The same morning, ADP and PNC Bank announced PNC Payroll by ADP, embedding payroll, HR, time, insurance and retirement into PNC's small-business digital banking app, with no price disclosed 41. Lyric HCM expanded to organizations in the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands, and larger Lyric and global payroll wins are due to contribute more meaningfully to revenue later in fiscal 2027, some into fiscal 2028 1.
The counterpoint: bookings are still setting records
The bull case is not fantasy. Employer Services logged another first-quarter record for new business bookings, revenue retention came in ahead of expectations, and PEO revenue grew 7% with its outlook unchanged 1.
Guggenheim lifted its price target to $340 from $300 on October 23 2. But ADP's own full-year guides cap the volume story: Employer Services bookings growth of 4% to 7%, revenue growth of about 6%, and retention still expected to decline slightly 12. TD Cowen carries a $265 Hold 2. At $285.37, the stock trades at about 22.9 times the top of its own new guidance 2. Frozen paychecks and compounding earnings are both in the price; one of them has to give.

What to watch
The October monthly National Employment Report lands within days, and the next NER Pulse follows on November 10 3. Next quarter, the two numbers that decide the argument are the same ones this quarter supplied: pays per control, for the billing base, and contacts per client, for how deep the machines cut.
