Avnet's record quarter came with $8.2 billion of inventory and an $842 million cash burn

The record quarter came with an $842 million operating cash burn, $2.1 billion of memory-priced inventory and a $650 million convertible struck at $70.27, all ahead of Wishbone's November 20 vote.

Memory is what drove the quarter: substantially all of Avnet's pricing increase was tied to memory products, and roughly a third of sequential sales growth came from memory pricing alone.

Avnet+4.10% — Avnet, up 4.10 percent today just posted the best quarter in its hundred-year history, and the honest reading of it is not the sales line but the bill that came with it. Fiscal first-quarter sales hit a record $10.7 billion, up 82% year on year, with adjusted earnings per share of $3.63, well above the $2.80 to $2.90 the company originally guided 13. Yet the 10-Q filed on November 6 shows operations used $842 million of cash in the quarter, against net income of $282 million 23.

The gap has a simple name: inventory

Avnet added $2.1 billion of stock and $893 million of receivables to serve demand it says is broad-based, led by data center, aerospace and defense, and networking 45. Substantially all of the quarter's pricing increase was tied to memory products 4, and management attributed roughly a third of the sequential sales growth to memory pricing alone 5.

That means a large share of the $8.2 billion now sitting on the balance sheet was bought at rising memory prices 1. If memory keeps climbing, that inventory is the engine. If the cycle turns, the same inventory is the write-down, and shareholders' equity of $5.3 billion against total assets of $18.5 billion leaves little cushion 1.

The boom was also borrowed

Financing inflows of $951 million covered the cash burn, and debt rose to $4.17 billion from $3.21 billion in a single quarter 23. Interest expense jumped to $92 million 1, which alone cost $0.23 of earnings per share quarter over quarter 5.

On top of that sits the $650 million convertible struck at $70.27, on which The Inference reported Wishbone's November 20 vote against chairman-led approval 8; with the stock closing at $85.68, those notes sit about 22% in the money, roughly 9.3 million shares of dilution against an 86 million share count 16.

The inventory Avnet bought dwarfs the equity backing it

What would have to go wrong

CFO Ken Jacobson says cash generation catches up by fiscal year-end as growth moderates, and return on working capital of 25% is the best in a decade 5. Both can be true and the risk remains: guidance already fades, calling for about 5% sequential growth in the December quarter 12.

The distributor's model works when prices rise and demand holds. The question the 10-Q forces is who is left holding $8.2 billion of inventory and $4.2 billion of debt if either leg wobbles 8. Watch the November 20 vote, then watch memory prices 8.
