onsemi scraps its $2 billion Czech fab as quarterly capex shrinks to $19 million

onsemi and the Czech ministry killed the $2 billion Roznov fab on November 6, with quarterly capital spending already down to $19 million. The next day the chief executive re-anchored silicon carbide on Korea, and Wolfspeed's own quarter shows the wafer market onsemi walked away from.

The promise lasted 29 months

On November 6, onsemi+0.78% — onsemi, up 0.78 percent today and the Czech Industry Ministry agreed not to proceed with the silicon carbide (SiC) expansion at its Roznov pod Radhostem site, a project initially valued at as much as $2 billion 1. Announced in June 2024, it was billed as the biggest single foreign investment in the Czech Republic since the 1993 split of Czechoslovakia, with jobs at the site set to rise from 1,700 to 3,000 3. The plan covered end-to-end SiC production, from crystal growth to finished power devices 2. The promise lasted 29 months 2.

Both sides blame the market

The company and the ministry cited evolving market dynamics and project economics 2. First Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Karel Havlíček tied the decision to current conditions across the global semiconductor market 2. Existing silicon and SiC operations at Roznov stay open, and onsemi says it will keep hiring and investing there and at its Brno development center 2.

The cash went to deals instead

The cancellation lands four days after onsemi agreed to buy Ferric, an integrated voltage regulator startup, for $600 million in cash plus up to $175 million in revenue milestones, a deal that lifted its 2030 AI data center revenue target above $3 billion 4. In October it moved the Synaptics+0.26% — Synaptics, up 0.26 percent today acquisition to an all-cash $123 per share, roughly $5.7 billion, backed by a committed $2.45 billion Morgan Stanley term loan 5.

The Inference reported on November 3 that the buyback had been cut to $19.9 million 6. Meanwhile the fab budget has nearly vanished: capital spending was $19 million in Q3 2026, down 95% from the $385 million spent in Q4 2023 10.

Wolfspeed's+16.60% — Wolfspeed, up 16.60 percent today own quarter posted the numbers that back the exit: substrate revenue fell 41% year over year to $38.2 million while its own device line fell 11%, and non-GAAP gross margin stood at -13% 7. onsemi's quarter, by contrast, brought $1.72 billion of revenue at a 41.4% GAAP gross margin 7. A diversified power franchise can walk away from a bet a leveraged pure-play cannot.

The day-after answer runs through Korea and the data center

The next day, November 7, chief executive Hassane El-Khoury told ChosunBiz that the Bucheon plant in Korea "plays a pivotal role in Onsemi's long-term SiC strategy"; a 2023 expansion there of about 1.4 trillion won targets more than 1 million 200mm wafers a year 8. He projected AI data center revenue would more than double this year 8. Analysts spent earnings week cutting targets, Evercore−1.89% — Evercore, down 1.89 percent today to $90 from $137 and Goldman−0.12% — Goldman, down 0.12 percent today to $85 from $95, yet the average target still sits at $96.16 against Friday's close of $63.31 9.

What decides it

Company guidance puts Q4 revenue at $1.72 billion to $1.82 billion 9. The tell is not onsemi's device line; it is whether substrate demand recovers at all, measured next in Wolfspeed's materials line and Infineon's ordering. Infineon extended its Wolfspeed wafer agreement to 200mm on October 15, so the bears are not unanimous 7.

Automotive was 51.4% of onsemi's revenue mix 9; if AI data center power keeps compounding while that book stalls, the scrapped fab becomes the cheapest decision El-Khoury ever made. If AI demand also stalls, he will have killed the fab and levered the balance sheet in the same quarter.
