Entegris' record AI quarter carries a $0.25-a-share accounting assist

Record third-quarter sales of $1.006 billion on real AI demand, and $0.25 of nine-month EPS of $2.24 from a January change in how long its machines are assumed to last. Long-term targets land November 9 on these numbers.

Entegris+4.62% — Entegris, up 4.62 percent today (NASDAQ: ENTG), the Massachusetts supplier of filters, polishing slurries and specialty gases to chipmakers, reported record third-quarter sales of $1.006 billion on October 29, 2026, up almost a quarter from a year earlier 1. The AI demand underneath is real. So is a quieter fact: about 11% of its nine-month GAAP earnings per share exists because in January the company decided its machines last longer than it used to think 2. Long-term targets land at its Capital Markets Day on November 9, set on numbers that carry that change 1.

Longer machine lives added $0.25 to nine-month earnings

The January review stretched the accounting life of manufacturing equipment to 14 years, from 5 to 10 before 2. Depreciation follows those lives on a straight line, so the change cut nine-month depreciation by $55.6 million and added $0.25 to diluted EPS of $2.24 2. The company says the new schedule reflects how its assets are actually used, obsolescence and capital plans included 2.

The margin expansion is partly the same change

Third-quarter GAAP gross margin reached 49.7%, the highest in at least three years 3. The 10-Q's own driver list names increased production volumes, "a decrease in depreciation expense due to the change in useful lives," and tariff refunds 2. Those refunds, $8.3 million collected under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, sit inside GAAP and outside the company's adjusted results 1. Adjusted EBITDA adds depreciation back, so the benefit lands where investors actually screen: reported margins and reported EPS.

The AI demand is real, and broad

None of this makes the boom fictional. Chief executive Dave Reeder tied the quarter to AI infrastructure spending and rising process complexity, and said the margin gains came from volume and yield rather than pricing 4.

Unit-driven revenue growth ran near 20% in the quarter, from single digits early in the year, while backlog rose more than a third sequentially and more than doubled from a year earlier, with book-to-bill "significantly above one" 4. The chain is short: more AI compute, more leading-edge wafers, more filtration and materials per wafer, more Entegris volume 4.

The replacement bill lands in later fiscal years

Depreciation schedules don't change what machines cost; they decide which fiscal years carry the expense. Nine-month capital spending nearly halved, to $124 million 2, so Entegris is buying less equipment while expensing what it owns more slowly.

If the machines truly run 14 years, the replacement cash simply arrives later; if they don't, the shortfall arrives as write-offs 5. Either way the bill skips the quarters being reported now, and today's buyers hold that deferral at a market value of about $24.3 billion 5. On November 9, the question worth asking is the gross margin under the old schedule 5. A demand story this strong should survive it.
