NXP's third price rise of 2026 lands on distributors' desks as onsemi feeds AI

NXP's third reported price rise of 2026 lands days after a $5 billion buyback and exclusive talks over Ambarella, while onsemi rations car chips to feed AI data-center revenue growing 175% a year. The notice is unconfirmed; the money is not.

onsemi chief executive Hassane El-Khoury: his company is rationing car chips to feed AI data-center demand.

A price letter with no number in it

Reports in Chinese trade media on November 2 said NXP+1.34% — NXP, up 1.34 percent today Semiconductors, the Dutch group that leads the world in automotive chips, has notified distributors of higher prices from January 1, 2027, the third increase it has announced this year, covering selected distribution and direct-supply lines 1. The notice blames raw materials, energy, labor, logistics and upstream suppliers, and discloses no size; distributors have advised customers with confirmed demand to order early and lock in 2026 prices 1.

NXP has not confirmed the letter, and the only written record located is the market report itself. The bill lands on carmakers and their Tier-1 suppliers.

The company raising prices is also buying

The letter lands on NXP's fastest back-to-back growth since 2024: third-quarter revenue of $3.79 billion, up 19% year on year, automotive revenue of $2.07 billion up 13%, earnings of $4.20 a share against a $4.12 consensus, and free cash flow of $1.21 billion 2. On October 27 the board authorized a further $5 billion of buybacks on top of $1.3 billion already available, at 1.3 times net leverage 2.

The stock still fell 9% on a fourth-quarter revenue guide of $3.85 billion, just under consensus 3. NXP is also shopping: reports on October 30 said the board of Ambarella+2.56% — Ambarella, up 2.56 percent today, an edge-AI chipmaker valued near $2.65 billion, chose NXP for exclusive takeover talks ahead of reported interest from Qualcomm−0.74% — Qualcomm, down 0.74 percent today and Nvidia+2.84% — Nvidia, up 2.84 percent today; neither company has confirmed, and Ambarella's own press page carried nothing on it 567.

onsemi is selling fewer car chips on purpose

Across the table sits the other answer. onsemi+1.78% — onsemi, up 1.78 percent today, the other big supplier of power chips to cars, is rationing automotive deliberately: third-quarter automotive revenue of $777 million, down 1% year on year, a fourth quarter guided down a high-single-digit percentage, and a stated refusal to fill customers' inventory-replenishment orders 8. The wafers are going to AI data centers instead, where onsemi booked $180 million in the quarter, up 175% year on year, on track for roughly $620 million this year and a doubling in 2027 8.

Both blame costs and spend like scarcity

Each company tells a gentle story. NXP's reported letter blames costs, not shortage; onsemi chief executive Hassane El-Khoury calls the car decline short-term and supply-driven, with automotive still the largest market in the five-year plan and shipments resuming in the first quarter 8.

The capital plans are less gentle. NXP returned $359 million to shareholders last quarter, added $5 billion of buyback power and opened a new 300mm fab in Singapore with Vanguard in September, all while negotiating a purchase; onsemi bought back just $20 million of stock and says debt paydown comes first around its $600 million cash deal for Ferric 28. Both fund one conviction: a wafer earns more feeding an AI processor than a dashboard.

What January decides

Watch three dated things: whether NXP confirms a size before January 1, since orders placed in the next eight weeks lock this year's prices 1; onsemi's fourth-quarter automotive print, guided lower 8; and any Ambarella terms, if exclusivity hardens into a deal 6. Hua Hong, the Shanghai foundry meant to collect the pricing read-through, fell 5.12% to HKD 59.30 the day the report ran 1. Whose automotive line rises first in 2027, NXP's price or onsemi's volume, tells which bet pays 1.

AI demand outruns AXT's doubled wafer supply; the up to $545 million fix needs Beijing's sign-off

AXT's record quarter shows AI demand outrunning even a doubled supply of the crystal discs its lasers are grown on. The up to $545 million expansion signed by its Chinese unit closes only if Beijing's filings clear, and the wafers still need export permits to leave.
