Perplexity lands in Hyundai cars, UK government servers and Macs while six publishers sue

Between the close of expert discovery and a jury trial, Perplexity shipped its answer engine into a Hyundai dashboard in India, UK government and defense servers, and a free local Mac model. The reported $30 billion round funds channels with no disclosed revenue while the engine that earns the money sits in court.

Perplexity co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 in San Francisco. The company's answer engine shipped into Hyundai cars, UK government servers and a free Mac app while a Dow Jones publisher suit heads to a jury.

In the week since October 19, when expert discovery closed in the Dow Jones suit against Perplexity$20B — Perplexity, private, latest valuation $20B, the company has shipped its answer engine into three places publisher lawsuits do not reach 1. Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal, alleges Perplexity's chatbot invented quotes that never appeared in a Journal story and filed them under the Journal's name, and a jury will now weigh that claim 1.

Hyundai put the engine in a car dashboard in India 2, UK government and defense customers can run it on their own servers 3, and a free Mac app runs a Perplexity model locally 4. The funding round reportedly above $30 billion, with Nvidia+2.61% — Nvidia, up 2.61 percent today in talks, is a bet that the answer engine was never going to stay a web page 5.

The engine is becoming a part other companies ship

Hyundai launched the Bayon in India on October 26 from Rs 9.99 lakh, carrying the company's first generative AI voice assistant in that market: Perplexity supplies the answers, SoundHound AI−2.60% — SoundHound AI, down 2.60 percent today supplies the voice, and the cockpit runs on Nvidia-accelerated software 2. It takes natural-language requests plus more than 500 embedded commands that work without an internet connection, in six languages including Hindi and Tamil 2.

On October 20, Valarian, a London startup, agreed to run Perplexity Computer, the cloud-based agent professionals use to automate computer tasks 5, inside servers institutions themselves control, isolated down to air-gapped networks cut off from the public web 36. On October 24 came Decider for Mac: a free app that runs Perplexity's 4-billion-parameter decision model on the machine and answers a named question with probabilities, no API key and no bill 47. Developers also gained batch runs of up to 50,000 Agent API requests, submitted as one file and answered asynchronously 89.

The distribution lands before the revenue does

Each new channel sits outside the web business the publishers are suing over. A dashboard assistant is a component Hyundai sells, a sovereign deployment runs on servers the customer owns, and a local model never touches Perplexity's cloud. The web channel, by contrast, faces at least six publisher fronts; CNN alone sued in May over more than 17,000 scraped stories 1.

The money has not moved with the shipments. Annualized revenue passed $750 million this year 5. It started the year under $250 million 5. The shipments are on the record as deployments, and Perplexity has disclosed no revenue from them 5.

Perplexity's valuation has more than doubled while its web channel sat in court

The round pays for the wiring

Whoever writes the reported check funds the companies turning the engine into something people use: the voice layer from SoundHound, listed on Nasdaq as SOUN and named in a mass-market car 102; the sovereignty layer from Valarian, built on $70 million raised 3; the cockpit silicon from Nvidia, also the party reported in talks for the equity seat 25.

The danger is that the verdict arrives first. A jury finding for Dow Jones would turn free use of attributed reporting into a licensing bill for every AI search engine 1, and it can land before the new channels show a disclosed dollar. The build is still right: adoption moves to where people already are, the car, the office network, the laptop. Watch whether the channels convert before the verdict does.
