Pinterest opens ad inventory to outside buyers via Magnite three days before Q3 earnings

Pinterest has thrown open its display and video inventory to outside buyers with Magnite as the toll-taker, the only new revenue lever disclosed before a Q3 print where growth was guided down to 13% to 15% from 18%. The question investors must price: new incremental demand, or margin handed away at scale.

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready. The company opened its ad inventory to outside programmatic buyers three days before its Q3 earnings report.

The pipe opens, and the toll booth moves in

Three days before Pinterest−6.29% — Pinterest, down 6.29 percent today reports third-quarter results, the company has handed its ad inventory to middlemen. Programmatic Deals reached general availability on October 26 in North America, South America and Asia Pacific, letting enterprise advertisers buy Pinterest display and video slots through outside platforms instead of only through Pinterest's own sales team 1.

The setup names its winners. Magnite is the primary supply-side platform, the pipe that connects Pinterest's inventory and audience signals to buyers. Demand runs through Amazon+0.71% — Amazon, up 0.71 percent today Ads, Google Display and Video 360 and Yahoo DSP 1. Magnite also folds Pinterest into Orchestration, its layer where AI agents can find, package and activate ad inventory 1.

The pitch is intent, and one pilot is the proof

The company's argument for giving up the direct channel is scale and pre-decisional intent: 640 million monthly users running more than 80 billion searches a month, over half commercial, and more than 96% of text searches unbranded 1. The one disclosed test is Moroccanoil's June campaign, which added Pinterest to an Amazon DSP buy. It added 15% incremental reach with just 1% audience overlap, 63% more new-to-brand buyers, and a 20% higher click-through rate than the brand's average video and display campaigns 1.

The complication: who keeps the margin

The evidence for new demand is thin and unaudited. Pinterest declined to say what share of ad revenue already runs programmatic, and the pilot numbers come from Pinterest itself 2. Selling through Magnite and the DSPs means sharing economics on inventory Pinterest previously sold direct, and commoditized inventory rarely keeps premium pricing.

The tell is who is missing. The Trade Desk−2.69% — The Trade Desk, down 2.69 percent today, the largest independent DSP, is absent from the launch list. "We're engaged with everyone that matters," said Jason Fairchild, Pinterest's GM of programmatic 2.

The open door

The timing is not accidental: growth was guided to 13% to 15% for Q3, down from 18% in Q2, when revenue reached $1.18 billion 2. Programmatic is the only new revenue lever disclosed before the October 29 print, and it arrives after Visual Search Ads launched in September and a new CFO, James Dibbo, took office October 5 3. Watch Thursday for a number Pinterest has so far refused to give: how much of the business already runs through the pipe.
