Pinterest's growth fell from 18% to 12%; management pins 3 of the 6 lost points on an EU customs repeal

Pinterest shares have slid for two sessions, to $18.96, since third-quarter revenue growth fell from 18% to 12% and a securities investigation opened. Management attributes three of the six lost points of growth to Europe's removal of the de minimis customs exemption, and says the pullback has begun to stabilize.

Pinterest chief executive Bill Ready attributed three of the six lost points of quarterly growth to the EU's repeal of the de minimis customs exemption.

The market filed Pinterest−4.07% — Pinterest, down 4.07 percent today (NYSE: PINS) alongside Snap this week as proof that smaller ad platforms lose to Meta+1.11% — Meta, up 1.11 percent today, and repriced it accordingly. Shares fell 7% on November 5 123. They closed at $18.96 the next day 123. Chief executive Bill Ready offered a different accounting on the earnings call: global revenue growth fell six points between the second and third quarters, and three of them came from a single European customs change that took effect mid-quarter 123.

Half the lost growth was taken at a border.

The hole in the quarter is a customs rule

De minimis, in place since 2008, let parcels worth up to €150 enter Europe duty-free; the EU scrapped it on July 1, 2026 4. Sellers shipping in from abroad lost the economics of European demand, and with tariffs already closing the American door they pulled ad spend to protect margins, as finance chief James Dibbo explained: few large markets are left to reroute to 3.

Europe took an 11-point hit to its growth rate and finished flat 3. The rest of the miss was Prime Day and World Cup timing plus currency 3. The shock is fading on management's account: the pullback stabilized early in the fourth quarter, and the core European business, excluding cross-border sellers, is again growing faster than it did in the second 3.

The AI layer is the part that worked

Nothing in the quarter broke the chain Pinterest is building from model to money. Its in-house post-trained models handle a transaction for less than 8% of the cost of comparable closed models, by Ready's account 3.

Seventy percent of search journeys now begin with a proactive AI recommendation before a user types anything; among searches through Pinterest Assistant, its conversational layer newly general in the US, about 80% are commercial 3. That intent is what the new formats sell: Visual Search Ads in beta, and inventory opened to programmatic buyers through Google, Amazon−0.12% — Amazon, down 0.12 percent today and Yahoo, a widening of the opening we reported before earnings, though such demand ramps slowly 3.

Record users, cheaper ads

Users set another record high 8, and the US and Canada grew 14% 3. The bear's reply is price: average ad prices fell 4% while Meta's rose 14% 1. The decline is mechanical, since impressions grew faster than revenue as lower-funnel formats and cheaper international inventory entered the auction, on a platform still earning a fraction of Meta's revenue per user 35.

The punishment outruns the record

Pinterest trades at 9.2 times forward earnings 1; its five-year average is 23.7 1. Two details say the discount has overshot. The investigation Kahn Swick & Foti opened on November 6 concerns the February 12 guidance miss that management blamed on tariffs, an earlier disclosure rather than this quarter's customs shock 6.

And the fourth-quarter outlook, growth of 8% to 12%, is the first from Dibbo, appointed October 5 and joined the Monday before the call, who does not expect the cross-border spend back for the holidays 37. The bottleneck on this chain is a customs regime and a European sales rebuild; the model layer is the part already working. If the stabilization holds, the fourth-quarter report in early February, where ad prices either turn up or do not, settles what the discount was pricing.
