Trane to buy coil maker Cancoil as a $12.5 billion backlog outruns its chiller production
Trane booked record cooling demand last quarter and still gave back margin in two of three regions, so it is buying the companies that make the parts behind its chillers. Whether owning the supply chain buys the margin back is the question underneath the stock.

Trane Technologies−4.75% — Trane Technologies, down 4.75 percent as of its last quote, the Irish-headquartered cooling group whose chillers keep AI data centers from overheating, has agreed to buy Cancoil Thermal, the Ontario maker of the coils and condensers that already feed its chiller plants, on undisclosed terms, with closing due by year end 1. Read against last week's results, the deal is a statement: AI builders have booked more cooling than Trane can ship, and the constraint on the company has moved from demand to delivery.
The chiller is the long pole
Chillers, the machines that carry heat out of a data center, can run 50 to 70 weeks from order to delivery, by the estimate of Freddie Sarhan, chief executive of energy-recovery equipment maker Sapphire Technologies; developers now order major plant before designs are finished 1. Last quarter showed what the wait is worth.
Bookings outran revenue in every region, leaving a $12.5 billion backlog 2. Yet group operating margin slipped, and only the Americas, where the AI demand sits, widened its margin; Europe and Asia Pacific gave theirs back, on the supply-chain and inflation headwinds chief executive Dave Regnery cited 2.

Trane's answer is to own the chain
Cancoil is the newest piece of a vertical build-out. Trane agreed in February to buy LiquidStack, a specialist in the direct-to-chip and immersion cooling that dense AI racks require, and its coolant distribution units now qualify under NVIDIA's+4.05% — NVIDIA, up 4.05 percent today DSX AI-factory blueprint, inside two 250-megawatt reference designs that also use modular cooling plants from Stellar Energy, another recent acquisition 13. One of those designs hands 22 megawatts back to compute 3.
The same logic runs through the power side. A blueprint published with power-management company Eaton+3.66% — Eaton, up 3.66 percent today in August knits cooling to the electrical system from grid to chip 4. In September, a laboratory chiller run with Eaton and Danfoss drew 800 volts of direct current straight from a data center's own supply, trimming conversion losses by up to 2 percent: a proof of concept, not a deployed product 5. Every purchase shortens the same chain, the parts, the liquid loop, the coordinated design.
What ownership has to buy back
Trane has spent about $1.1 billion on acquisitions this year through October 2. The sceptic reads the chart above as the price of the backlog, margin spent holding demand that cannot yet be served, the profit-conversion worry now attached to the stock 6. The bull reads the same purchases as the route through it, moving Trane from component supplier to full thermal-systems provider paid more per installed megawatt 6. Segment margins, not bookings, will settle the argument, and management takes questions at the Baird conference on November 12 7.
Demand is already booked. Delivery is what is for sale, and Trane is buying it.
