Amazon will sell Trainium chips outside AWS in late 2027, into a market Nvidia holds an estimated 81-90% of

A Trainium chip sold outside Amazon books its revenue once; kept inside the company's cloud, it earns rent for five to six years. Andy Jassy has set late 2027 as the window for the first external sales, into a market where Nvidia holds an estimated 81 to 90 percent of revenue.

Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy set late 2027 as the window for Trainium's first sales outside AWS.

Trainium is Amazon's−1.61% — Amazon, down 1.61 percent today in-house AI accelerator, and until now there has been exactly one way to get one: renting it by the hour inside Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud business 1. On Thursday's third-quarter earnings call, chief executive Andy Jassy set a date for that to change: "With Trainium demand so strong, customers continue encouraging us to make it available outside of AWS. We intend to do so late in 2027." 2

Google has lifted its cloud by selling its TPU AI chips for use beyond its own facilities, and Amazon will now copy the playbook 3. Reports surfaced in June of talks to sell physical Trainium racks to government-backed and co-location buyers, data centers that rent floor space to other companies; the call turned those talks into a dated commitment 4.

The line on sale already runs at $25 billion a year

Trainium and its sibling processor Graviton crossed a $25 billion annualized run rate in the third quarter, growing at triple-digit rates, with revenue commitments for each chip family up more than 20 times year over year 25. Anthropic$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B, the AI lab behind the Claude chatbot, has signed for about five gigawatts of Trainium capacity; OpenAI$500B — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $500B, the maker of ChatGPT, for about two, inside more than $225 billion of Trainium commitments 14. Jassy's April shareholder letter sized a standalone version of the chip business at roughly $50 billion a year 5.

The contest is with Nvidia, whose moat is software

The buyers Amazon is courting mostly write code in CUDA, the Nvidia−3.57% — Nvidia, down 3.57 percent today toolkit most AI developers grew up on, and Nvidia holds an estimated 81 to 90 percent of AI accelerator revenue 5. Amazon just open-sourced TorchNeuron, which lets existing PyTorch code run on Trainium without rewriting, a direct strike at that software lock 12. Trainium2 already claims roughly 30 percent better price-performance than comparable Nvidia GPUs 5. Amazon itself still plans to deploy more than a million Nvidia GPUs starting this year, so this is a share shift, not a defection 4.

Sell a chip once, or rent it for six years

Jassy noted that only two companies on earth have both a significant cloud and a chip strong enough to sell outside it, which is why almost nobody else faces this allocation problem 2.

His framing of it: sell externally and "you get to recognize the revenue as soon as it leaves your inventory"; keep the chip inside AWS, rented out as EC2 instances, the cloud's basic rental-compute offering, or through Bedrock, its service for renting AI models, and "you actually will end up driving more absolute revenue and free cash flow," because the chip earns for five to six years 2.

Keep the chip, keep the margin

AWS's 38.7 percent operating margin rests on that owned silicon; its finance chief tied the quarter's profitability directly to "investments in custom chips and custom networking" 2. Capacity through AWS is reported mostly sold out for 2026 and largely committed into 2028 1. Every rack Amazon ships to someone else's data center is a rack AWS cannot rent.

The case that nothing gets cannibalized

The counterargument is that demand outruns supply so completely that both uses fit at once. Jassy said that even at $220 billion of 2026 capital spending, Amazon will not have enough capacity to meet demand 5. Peter DeSantis, who leads AI infrastructure at AWS, told Bloomberg in June that cannibalization is not a worry, arguing that a company installing Trainium in its own data center is likely also running workloads on AWS anyway 5. Google−0.42% — Google, down 0.42 percent today sells its TPUs for external use and still grew its cloud 103 percent last quarter 35.

Shareholders fund the choice either way

Third-quarter cash capital spending was $75.9 billion, about $33.5 billion above the quarter's operating cash flow, and free cash flow over the trailing twelve months is a $42.4 billion outflow against a $14.7 billion inflow a year earlier 256. Amazon's filings show free cash flow negative in the two quarters before this one as well 7, and the company raised $48.1 billion of long-term debt in the quarter 5, extending the financing this publication traced earlier this week.

Amazon's quarterly capex now outruns operating cash flow, and the gap hit $33.5 billion in Q3

The market is not waiting for 2027

Amazon has disclosed no pricing for external chip sales 1. Watch the first split between chips sold and chips kept, the 2027 capital budget, which Jassy said will be meaningfully higher 2, and whether the run rate climbs past $25 billion 5. The stock closed down 4.25 percent at $243.79 and slid about 7 percent further after hours 8. Jassy's framing was blunter than the stock's move: "We can fund this plan, and I think it will forever change the size of Amazon. It will forever change our revenue." 9
