Citi sees a hard reset coming for Adobe before the new CEO even starts

Citi downgraded Adobe to Sell on November 4, the same morning Adobe pushed its agent into ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini, leaving the stock parked between a $200 bear case and a $267 hold case with the fiscal 2027 guide two weeks away.

A new CEO, two empty seats

Anil Chakravarthy takes over as Adobe's chief executive on December 1, inheriting vacancies in both the CFO seat and the head of Digital Media role, which runs Adobe's largest business. 1 That vacancy is not new: our September 29 report covered the exit of the executive who ran Photoshop, with no successor named 1. What is new is the calendar. The fourth-quarter report in early December is where the fiscal 2027 guide lands, and Citi expects it below consensus. 1

What the reset would look like

The bank cut its fiscal 2027 and 2028 estimates for net-new ARR, or annual recurring revenue, the subscription income Adobe books each year, by roughly $470 million and $500 million, to $1.5 billion and $1.35 billion 1. That implies ARR growth of 5.3% in fiscal 2027 and 4.5% in fiscal 2028, 200 to 300 basis points below the Street. 1

The mechanism: Adobe is forgoing Creative Cloud price increases and steering new users toward lower-priced, AI-first tiers, which Citi says adds about 200 basis points of pressure to ARR growth, plus another 50 basis points as earlier price rises lap. 1 The bank also trimmed its fiscal 2027 gross margin estimate by 70 basis points for AI inference costs Adobe does not yet monetize. 1

The bulls counter that the gloom is priced. The five targets value Adobe at 7.3x to 9.7x the $27.43 of fiscal 2027 earnings consensus still expects, against a 23x five-year average forward multiple; Adobe trades at 9.4x today. 3 Whether estimates hold is the unprovable part of this story, and December answers it.

The same morning, the counterargument

The same morning, Adobe announced that CX Enterprise Coworker, its customer-experience agent for marketers, now runs inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini for business, Microsoft+7.08% — Microsoft, up 7.08 percent today Copilot and Databricks$216.58B — Databricks, private, latest valuation $216.58B, serving more than 20,000 brands. 2 That is the strategy Citi is skeptical of: user growth first, monetization later. The arrangement suggests the AI platforms capture the audience while Adobe absorbs the inference bill, and Adobe's own release, the source for the announcement, does not price that trade in dollars. 2

The tell lands in December

The tell in the December report is the fiscal 2027 net-new ARR guide 4. Near Citi's $1.5 billion, the bears are right 4. Near the Street's, the 9.4x camp just bought Adobe at half its old price 4. As our November 4 report showed, when Canva cut 22% of its staff as AI costs bit, Adobe entered this design war as the cheap incumbent. 4 December shows whether cheap was enough.
