Salesforce signed $14 billion of AI deals on debt that more than tripled in a year

Four signed acquisitions, three of them in five weeks, buy the AI that answers customers and coaches the humans who remain. The funding came from debt, the buyback made it heavier, and December's fiscal Q3 report shows the cost.

Salesforce+2.32% — Salesforce, up 2.32 percent today spent 2026 buying the AI that talks to customers 461. Four signed acquisitions stack to about $14 billion 46, three of them agreed inside the five weeks to November 2 1.

Total debt jumped from $11.2 billion to $41.7 billion in the twelve months to July 31 2. The buying itself points where customer service is heading, toward voice agents that close calls and agents that act on customer intent. The debt funding is the part the market has not finished pricing, and December's fiscal third-quarter report is the first test of whether the cash line holds.

Voice agents, marketing, research: what the four deals buy

Cresta, signed on November 2 for a reported $2.7 billion that Salesforce has not confirmed, runs voice agents that resolve complex customer calls end to end and coaches the human representatives who remain in real time 34. Its customers include Marriott+2.11% — Marriott, up 2.11 percent today, Comcast+4.39% — Comcast, up 4.39 percent today and Alaska Airlines, so the capability already runs in enterprise service, not in a demo 5. Braze+0.64% — Braze, up 0.64 percent today, signed October 20 for $5.66 billion in cash, adds AI marketing automation and is expected to close in fiscal 2028 427.

Fin, the customer-service platform formerly called Intercom, was announced in June for $3.6 billion and closed early, in September 6. Listen Labs, signed September 29 for about $2 billion, roughly 67 times its annualized revenue, automates qualitative customer research and closes in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027 6. Fiscal 2028 begins in February 2027, so most of this stack is still pending 46.

The funding came from debt, and the buyback carries it

Debt sat near $11 billion for years, then reached $41.7 billion by this July 28. The same twelve months carried $35.1 billion of share repurchases, up from $6.22 billion the year before, including a $25 billion accelerated share repurchase, a program that hands the cash to a bank up front so the shares are bought back immediately 2. Cash and short-term investments fell to $11.4 billion over the same stretch, leaving net debt of $30.3 billion, about two years of free cash flow at the trailing $15.2 billion 2.

Management said in May that the debt issued for that buyback takes about five points off fiscal 2027 free cash flow growth, which is guided to 4 to 5 percent 7. Diluted shares fell from 962 million to 821 million, so each remaining share now holds a larger slice of the debt too 2.

The market voted before the numbers arrive

The stock fell about 3 percent to $219.20 on the Cresta news, a fourth straight lower close 59, and it is down about 16 percent this year 9. The week before, a software rout led by ServiceNow and scrutiny of the Braze bid, which we priced when it was signed, had already dragged Salesforce among the Dow's biggest decliners 10. Braze's technology chief, Jonathan Hyman, sold 20,000 shares at $45.76 that same week under a trading plan prearranged in April 11.

December's fiscal third-quarter report, expected in December, is the first print to show net debt, free cash flow and the buyback's cost after the spree 2. Borrowing to shrink the share count while signing $14 billion of AI deals is a bet that the acquired products will pay for both 27. Where observation ends and projection begins is the conversion of Cresta, Fin, Braze and Listen Labs~$270M — Listen Labs, private, latest valuation ~$270M into revenue on Agentforce, Salesforce's AI-agent platform; nothing on the record yet proves that conversion or refutes it.

The December cash flow statement, not the announcements, will carry the answer.
