Lam Research warned China sales will fall; Qnity, down 9.5% with China a third of revenue, reports Nov. 4

Lam Research said Chinese sales will fall meaningfully and the chip sector sold off on October 22. Qnity, down 9.48% to $108.78, sells what Chinese fabs consume per wafer, so the warning reaches its revenue later but with no cushion, and the November 4 print settles the question.

A finished wafer in a fab cleanroom. Qnity's pads, slurries and lithography chemistries are consumed on every wafer a fab runs, so a pullback in Chinese wafer starts reaches its consumables revenue with a lag and no cushion.

The polishing pad is the quiet item on the wafer line. Qnity Electronics−0.25% — Qnity Electronics, down 0.25 percent today (NYSE: Q), the semiconductor materials business DuPont+0.60% — DuPont, up 0.60 percent today spun off in autumn 2025, sells the chemical mechanical planarization pads, slurries and photolithography chemistries that fabs consume on every wafer they run 3. Revenue tied to wafer output rather than to one-time equipment purchases is likely why a warning from an equipment maker hit the stock so hard this week: consumables follow what fabs actually produce, so a demand signal lands there as well as on the toolmakers. 3

Lam's warning moved the whole supply chain

The warning came from Lam Research+0.47% — Lam Research, up 0.47 percent today on October 21 3. Lam posted record September-quarter revenue of $8.22 billion, up 54% year over year, but guided December-quarter revenue to $8.6 billion with two caveats: supply constraints were holding results back, and China sales will fall meaningfully 3. On October 22 the supply chain sold off: Applied Materials+1.31% — Applied Materials, up 1.31 percent today down 6%, ASML+0.84% — ASML, up 0.84 percent today down 3%, Marvell+2.12% — Marvell, up 2.12 percent today down 9.40%, Astera Labs+1.18% — Astera Labs, up 1.18 percent today down 10.83%, and Lam down 9.04%, all in morning trading 3. Qnity closed down 9.48% at $108.78 2, leaving it 36.1% below its June 22 high of $177.28. 3

Why a third of the revenue base sits in one region

The warning reaches Qnity directly through its own numbers. Asia-Pacific is close to four-fifths of revenue, China contributes roughly a third, and the largest customers are Samsung and TSMC+1.22% — TSMC, up 1.22 percent today 1. Pads and slurries are consumed per wafer, so a Chinese pullback in wafer starts flows into Qnity's consumables revenue with a lag and no cushion. Net debt of about $3 billion sharpens the exposure. 1

The complication: Lam said its problem was supply, not demand, and a China decline, not a global one. And Qnity's Q2 was strong 1 3. Revenue rose 22% year over year to $1.43 billion, adjusted EPS of $1.19 beat the $1.07 consensus, and management raised 2026 guidance to $5.55 to 5.65 billion of revenue and $4.40 to $4.60 of adjusted EPS. 1 3

But the growth did not reach the bottom line: net profit fell 34% to $124 million and operating cash flow fell 11.7% to $241 million even as revenue climbed 2. Costs are rising faster than sales, which leaves less room to absorb a demand shock. 2

Apple buys the films, without a price tag

There is an American offset, though it carries no price tag. On October 20, Apple−0.45% — Apple, down 0.45 percent today named Qnity a partner in its American Manufacturing Program, producing the specialty films for the iPhone 18 Pro's variable-aperture camera system 4 5. Apple pledged up to $100 million over three years to the titanium partner, Perryman; for Qnity it named no figure at all. 4 5

The November 4 print settles it

Qnity reports Q3 before the open on November 4, with consensus at $1.20 adjusted EPS on $1.49 billion of revenue 2 3. Two numbers in that report decide it: whether China revenue holds against Lam's warning, and whether fab utilization at its biggest customers stays high enough to keep consumables volumes growing. Anyone buying the 36%-off stock into the print should size the position for a third of the revenue base sitting in one region. 1 2 3

What happens next

Does China revenue hold against Lam's warning, and does fab utilization at Samsung and TSMC keep consumables volumes growing?

The case for

Qnity's Q2 was strong: revenue up 22% year over year to $1.43 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.19 beat the $1.07 consensus

The case against

Lam Research guided December-quarter China sales lower, and China is roughly a third of Qnity's revenue with per-wafer consumables and no cushion
