MediaTek's first AI chip adds $2.5 billion of Q4 revenue at a lower margin, funded by Nvidia and Alphabet

MediaTek's first custom AI accelerator is guided to US$2.5 billion of fourth-quarter revenue, but the same release cuts the gross margin guide, and Nvidia and Alphabet own a piece of the ramp through a convertible bond.

MediaTek's marketing image for its custom data center silicon line. The first AI ASIC built for Alphabet began shipping in September and is guided to US$2.5 billion of fourth-quarter revenue.

On Friday MediaTek−3.21% — MediaTek, down 3.21 percent today stopped being a phone-chip company that dabbles in AI. Chief executive Rick Tsai told investors the firm's first custom AI accelerator, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) built for one cloud customer, began shipping in September and will bring in US$2.5 billion of revenue in the fourth quarter 2. That is roughly 37 to 39 percent of a quarterly guide of NT$210.1 billion to NT$221.8 billion, about US$6.5 to 6.8 billion, built in a single quarter from nothing 1.

Third-quarter revenue was NT$168.06 billion, up 18.3 percent year on year, with net income of NT$28.20 billion 1. And the customer has a name, or nearly: Broadcom−5.29% — Broadcom, down 5.29 percent today, the custom-chip leader, has confirmed MediaTek is Alphabet's development partner on the training-optimized TPU 8t 5.

The margin guide points the other way

The complication sits in the same release. The fourth-quarter gross margin guide is 43.5 to 46.5 percent against 46.3 percent reported in the third quarter, so the top end is roughly flat and the middle of the range points down 1.

Management said the dilution is structural before the money arrived: on the second-quarter call, CFO David Ku told investors data center ASIC margins are "slightly dilutive to corporate average" and that margin stays similar "generation after generation," not higher 6. One custom chip line is set to carry more than a third of quarterly sales at below-average margin.

The customer is a creditor too

Then there is the funding. In August MediaTek issued a record US$3.9 billion of overseas convertible bonds; Nvidia−3.57% — Nvidia, down 3.57 percent today put in US$3.5 billion and Alphabet−0.42% — Alphabet, down 0.42 percent today also participated 2. Alphabet is also a buyer of the custom silicon, so the customer is a creditor too.

Nvidia ran the same play at Lumentum, the US$83 billion optics maker that Marvell, a chip designer and MediaTek's direct rival in custom AI silicon, is now in advanced talks to buy, taking a US$2 billion stake tied to a photonics collaboration 4. Buying the supplier's paper to hold the supply line is standard practice now. Meanwhile Digitimes reports Anthropic's$350B — Anthropic, private, latest valuation $350B surging ASIC business favors Broadcom, where chief executive Hock Tan just sealed a US$63 billion XPU financing for the AI lab 3.

What the multiple is set on

The counterpoint deserves its day. AI demand, Tsai says, continues "for sure" 2. MediaTek confirmed a second ASIC customer for revenue in 2028, stated that customer is not Chinese, and retired the ByteDance speculation 1. It targets the upper end of about US$16 billion in 2027 ASIC revenue, around 20 percent of that market 1. The stock is up 174 percent this year against 56 percent for Taiwan's benchmark, at a US$200 billion market value 2.

But the arithmetic behind that multiple now has a shape: a third of sales arriving at a below-average gross margin, one customer named and one unnamed, and the money for the ramp partly supplied by the buyers themselves 126. High-volume production of the second accelerator is on track for the first quarter of 2028, the next scheduled proof of which model MediaTek is actually running 2.
