nVent grows sales 44%, raises its forecast, and watches the stock fall 6%
The data-center electrical supplier posted record sales, beat estimates and lifted full-year guidance on October 30. The shares fell more than 6 percent anyway, and the filing shows the bill the market is charging: a thinner gross margin and Q4 organic growth guided at 26 to 29 percent against the third quarter's 44.

The best quarter in the company's history, marked down within hours
nVent Electric−9.87% — nVent Electric, down 9.87 percent today (NYSE: NVT), the London-based maker of electrical enclosures and connection gear whose data-center business now leads its growth, posted record sales and orders on October 30: third-quarter sales of $1.51 billion, up 44 percent on both a reported and an organic basis, and adjusted earnings of $1.52 a share, up 67 percent and 13 cents above the $1.39 analyst consensus 12. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance was raised to $5.36 to $5.39, from $5.00 to $5.10 1.
The verdict arrived anyway. After closing October 29 at $138.15, the stock traded at $129.50 premarket, down 6.2 percent 3, and Reuters' wrap of the print ran under the headline "beats estimates but shares fall on guidance" 4. By mid-morning the shares were still down close to 4 percent 5.

The growth is arriving at a thinner margin
The filing explains the cold reception. Gross margin fell to 35.8 percent of sales from 37.4 percent a year earlier 1. Systems Protection, the segment housing the data-center enclosure and prefabricated e-house business, grew 54 percent organically to $1.10 billion and widened its segment margin 260 basis points to 23.0 percent 1. Electrical Connections, the legacy fasteners-and-connectors arm, grew 23 percent and gave back 180 basis points, to 28.2 percent 1.
The growth is young, too. New products supplied about 30 of the 44 points of sales growth 1; the quarter rides on products too young to have a margin history. The fourth-quarter guide then cuts organic growth to 26 to 29 percent, with reported growth held near 46 percent only because the Maverick Power acquisition, closed October 1, contributes about 19 points 1.

Vertiv got paid for the same story two days earlier
On October 28, Vertiv−5.81% — Vertiv, down 5.81 percent today, the data-center power and cooling maker, grew sales 61 percent, booked organic order growth above 100 percent, raised full-year guidance on every metric, and rallied 14.5 percent 67. nVent told a version of the same story and paid for it. The de-rating also predates the print: at $169.56 on October 2, the stock fetched 33.6 times its then-guidance midpoint, by one comparison of the two names; at $129.50 premarket it fetches roughly 24 times the new midpoint 9.
The bull case is real: record orders and sales in chief executive Beth Wozniak's words 1, data-center revenue above $2 billion expected this year 5, and Maverick adding roughly $700 million of data-center switchgear revenue for $1.75 billion upfront plus up to $550 million contingent 8. The tell is whether Systems Protection holds a margin near 23 percent with Maverick consolidated 5. The market has voted on the growth rate; the margin line votes next.
