PDF Solutions beat estimates, fell 13%, and its backlog shrank for the first time since 2024

PDF Solutions' software helps chipmakers analyze factory data from wafer production.

PDF Solutions−0.43% — PDF Solutions, down 0.43 percent today, a Santa Clara company whose software helps chipmakers analyze factory data, reported record third-quarter revenue of $68.3 million on November 5, up 20% year on year, and beat earnings estimates: non-GAAP EPS of $0.40 against the $0.34 Zacks consensus, a 17.65% surprise 13. The stock fell 13.24% to $34.52 anyway 6. The number the headline ignored is the backlog: $247.2 million at September 30, down from $270.7 million in Q2 and $292.0 million a year earlier, its first sequential decline since 2024 14.

The order book must grow, and the deals have not landed

Getting year-end backlog back above $271 million implies roughly $100 million of net bookings in the fourth quarter 5. What management has actually disclosed is one eight-figure eProbe contract and several seven-figure deals 5.

CEO John Kibarian says enough of a handful of large contracts will close in Q4 to grow backlog, with the rest spilling into Q1 2027; the call summary puts Q4 revenue growth near 17%, below the reaffirmed 20% annual target 14. CFO Adnan Raza blamed bookings and deal timing, and committed only that year-end backlog will exceed the Q2 level 4.

The other side of the ledger

Sellers also point to Exensio Aurora, the AI-native architecture unveiled in September, which has no revenue yet and no measured uplift; Kibarian called feedback "mostly demo-related" 45. Q3 capex of $15.1 million outran operating cash flow of $13.8 million, and Q4 gross margin is guided to 75% to 77% against the 77% model 5.

At $34.52 the stock trades at 138 times trailing GAAP earnings, though 23 times forward, and is still up 39.5% this year 36. Buyers of the dip own a record quarter, 28% non-GAAP operating margin and a real equipment-cycle proxy: Cimetrix and secureWISE are about 20% of revenue, growing faster than the company, and Intel+5.01% — Intel, up 5.01 percent today standardized on secureWISE across front-end, test and assembly 45.

Sellers bet the bookings do not come. The evidence arrives in Q4 bookings, with Onto Innovation's+7.78% — Onto Innovation, up 7.78 percent today November 9 report, consensus $392.03 million of revenue, the next outside read on the same capex cycle 7. This comes amid a sector-wide selloff after senators called for brakes on AI data center construction, which knocked Nvidia+5.27% — Nvidia, up 5.27 percent today down 7.5% the same day 8.

Vicor's $66.6 million royalty line, a third of a record quarter, comes from one unnamed license

Q3 revenue rose 78.5% to $197.1 million and the stock still fell from $212.00 to $136.02 in two weeks. The 10-Q shows $66.6 million of the quarter is royalties from one agreement whose terms, catch-up and counterparty are undisclosed.

TSMC locked at its NT$2,020 limit-down as Taiwan's Taiex opened down a record 3,737 points

The Taiex opened November 6 with a record 3,737-point plunge that locked TSMC at its daily limit of NT$2,020; the stock closed at NT$2,135 after Taiwan authorized its stabilization fund, while US chip shares rebounded in premarket. The morning print came from the exchange's price band, and the band is not a valuation.

Camtek booked $800 million of orders, the stock fell 8% intraday, and gross margin stalled at 51.1%

Twelve analysts still average a $170.20 target on Camtek, 68% above the close, while the COO hedged his own recovery timeline on the earnings call: "We're not sure about it." The record quarter is booked; the argument is whether it converts at improving margins.

Samsung's bonus pool could pay a memory engineer $560,000 as CXMT poaches Samsung's staff

Samsung's new uncapped bonus pool routes 10.5% of chip profit to employees fighting Chinese headhunters, just as CXMT's server DRAM timeline and a 10% share plunge ask whether the profits funding the defense will last.

Micron fell 5.9% on CXMT samples of a DRAM design it abandoned; China eased buyback rules

Micron sold off on news that China's DRAM champion validated samples of a design Micron abandoned. Days later, Beijing's regulator ordered price-defense buybacks, a sign the state itself sees the champion's stock story wobbling.

FormFactor's record 54.7% gross margin included $8.6 million of tariff refunds that end after Q4

FormFactor's quarterly report shows 3.1 points of its record margin came from IEEPA tariff refunds that stop after the fourth quarter, while the new Texas plant's underutilization costs are headed into cost of revenues. Adjusted for the refund, the quarter sits at the guided level, not above it.
