Samsung's bonus pool could pay a memory engineer $560,000 as CXMT poaches Samsung's staff

Samsung's new uncapped bonus pool routes 10.5% of chip profit to employees fighting Chinese headhunters, just as CXMT's server DRAM timeline and a 10% share plunge ask whether the profits funding the defense will last.

A Samsung memory engineer earning about $60,000 a year can now collect roughly $560,000 in pre-tax bonuses, by the estimate of the company's largest union 1. The money is not generosity. It is a payroll defense against Chinese headhunters offering 60% to 100% raises, guaranteed jobs, housing and school fees, and it is being spent inside a profit window the market is no longer sure will stay open 1.

The pool is uncapped, and so is the problem

On October 7 Samsung outlined the mechanism: 10.5% of the chip division's 2026 operating profit flows into an uncapped pool, 40% split equally among all Device Solutions employees, 60% allocated by unit, paid in shares pending shareholder approval 17. Two-thirds of each payout is locked in shares for one to two years, which ties the retention tool to the share price itself 1. Samsung provisioned 15.4 trillion won for it in the first half of 2026; KED Global put the third-quarter charge near 11.4 trillion won 1.

What the money defends

A parliamentary audit traced at least 27 senior engineers from Samsung and SK hynix+3.89% — SK hynix, up 3.89 percent today to CXMT−4.98% — CXMT, down 4.98 percent today, China's biggest DRAM maker, carrying 415.9 combined years of experience, an average of 15.4 each 1. CXMT's R&D staff nearly tripled from 2,606 at end-2022 to 7,491 by June 2026, and its fifth-generation DRAM entered mass production in September 1. Whether technology moved with the people is not established by career records; the capability buildup is.

The profits funding the defense are the ones being sold

The pool exists because Samsung posted a preliminary 107.4 trillion won third-quarter operating profit, up 782.5% year on year, the first quarter above 100 trillion won by any Korean company 23. The market is selling exactly that windfall: Samsung fell from 272,000 won on October 8 to 181,400 won intraday on November 6, when a Kospi circuit breaker triggered on AI data-center fears 25.

The competitive clock is running too. On October 12, CXMT claimed key progress on a 4F² memory-cell structure, with DDR5 server RDIMMs planned by end-2026; Samsung targets the same design for mass production by 2028 4.

The squeeze is the story

The pool shrinks if memory profits fall, precisely when poachers can pay 1. That is the position the record shows: a defense funded by a boom that CXMT's end-2026 server timeline and this month's AI-fear selloff are both pricing against 1. Watch the memory price print next quarter; it sets both sides of the trade.

Vicor's $66.6 million royalty line, a third of a record quarter, comes from one unnamed license

Q3 revenue rose 78.5% to $197.1 million and the stock still fell from $212.00 to $136.02 in two weeks. The 10-Q shows $66.6 million of the quarter is royalties from one agreement whose terms, catch-up and counterparty are undisclosed.

TSMC locked at its NT$2,020 limit-down as Taiwan's Taiex opened down a record 3,737 points

The Taiex opened November 6 with a record 3,737-point plunge that locked TSMC at its daily limit of NT$2,020; the stock closed at NT$2,135 after Taiwan authorized its stabilization fund, while US chip shares rebounded in premarket. The morning print came from the exchange's price band, and the band is not a valuation.

PDF Solutions beat estimates, fell 13%, and its backlog shrank for the first time since 2024

PDF Solutions beat on earnings and reaffirmed its 20% growth target, but its backlog fell for the first time since 2024 and the stock dropped 13%. The fourth-quarter bookings number now decides both sides.

Camtek booked $800 million of orders, the stock fell 8% intraday, and gross margin stalled at 51.1%

Twelve analysts still average a $170.20 target on Camtek, 68% above the close, while the COO hedged his own recovery timeline on the earnings call: "We're not sure about it." The record quarter is booked; the argument is whether it converts at improving margins.

Micron fell 5.9% on CXMT samples of a DRAM design it abandoned; China eased buyback rules

Micron sold off on news that China's DRAM champion validated samples of a design Micron abandoned. Days later, Beijing's regulator ordered price-defense buybacks, a sign the state itself sees the champion's stock story wobbling.

FormFactor's record 54.7% gross margin included $8.6 million of tariff refunds that end after Q4

FormFactor's quarterly report shows 3.1 points of its record margin came from IEEPA tariff refunds that stop after the fourth quarter, while the new Texas plant's underutilization costs are headed into cost of revenues. Adjusted for the refund, the quarter sits at the guided level, not above it.
