Micron fell 5.9% on CXMT samples of a DRAM design it abandoned; China eased buyback rules

Micron sold off on news that China's DRAM champion validated samples of a design Micron abandoned. Days later, Beijing's regulator ordered price-defense buybacks, a sign the state itself sees the champion's stock story wobbling.

Micron chairman and chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra meets Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo in July 2025. This week his company fell 5.9% on news that CXMT had validated samples of a DRAM design Micron abandoned.

Micron+4.09% — Micron, up 4.09 percent today Technology fell 5.9% on Wednesday after reports that China's ChangXin Memory Technologies−4.98% — ChangXin Memory Technologies, down 4.98 percent today (CXMT) had validated samples of its next-generation 4F² DRAM design 2. The same week, CXMT's own shares sat more than 25% below where they traded a month earlier, and China's securities regulator moved to make it easier for listed companies to buy back stock and defend their prices 1. Those two headlines belong to one story, and the second one should temper how the first is read.

The threat case looks strong on paper

CXMT, the Hefei-based DRAM maker founded a decade ago with government backing, told investors it will ship customers server-grade samples built on the 4F² architecture by December 31, a cell layout Micron abandoned after two decades of research 3. BofA+0.80% — BofA, up 0.80 percent today Securities notes 4F² raises memory density without EUV lithography machines, which US export controls deny China, while warning of higher costs and execution risk 3. CXMT held about 10% of the $152 billion DRAM market as of June, per Counterpoint, still far behind Samsung's 38%, SK Hynix's+2.15% — SK Hynix, up 2.15 percent today 25% and Micron's 24% 5.

The regulator's order is the tell

On November 2, the China Securities Regulatory Commission announced amendments to buyback rules: a share price below its issue price becomes a valid reason for a defensive buyback, the six-month post-listing ban on such purchases is removed, and companies listed under 36 months must implement the stabilization measures promised at listing 1.

The CSRC said it would specifically encourage and supervise buybacks among index constituents and leading tech stocks 1. CXMT's chairman had already proposed a 1 to 2 billion yuan buyback on October 28 1. The STAR 50 index is down about 40% since June 1.

A threatened champion does not need a rescue order

A company whose production ramp genuinely threatens the incumbents does not usually need its regulator to order its own shareholders rescued. The state's intervention does not disprove CXMT's technology, but it is evidence that the equity story behind it is fragile, and it stretches the timeline on which that technology turns into pricing pressure for Micron 12. CXMT's Q3 revenue of 118.71 billion yuan, up 613%, shows the business is real 3. What the buyback order shows is that the market has started to price it like something else.

Vicor's $66.6 million royalty line, a third of a record quarter, comes from one unnamed license

Q3 revenue rose 78.5% to $197.1 million and the stock still fell from $212.00 to $136.02 in two weeks. The 10-Q shows $66.6 million of the quarter is royalties from one agreement whose terms, catch-up and counterparty are undisclosed.

TSMC locked at its NT$2,020 limit-down as Taiwan's Taiex opened down a record 3,737 points

The Taiex opened November 6 with a record 3,737-point plunge that locked TSMC at its daily limit of NT$2,020; the stock closed at NT$2,135 after Taiwan authorized its stabilization fund, while US chip shares rebounded in premarket. The morning print came from the exchange's price band, and the band is not a valuation.

PDF Solutions beat estimates, fell 13%, and its backlog shrank for the first time since 2024

PDF Solutions beat on earnings and reaffirmed its 20% growth target, but its backlog fell for the first time since 2024 and the stock dropped 13%. The fourth-quarter bookings number now decides both sides.

Camtek booked $800 million of orders, the stock fell 8% intraday, and gross margin stalled at 51.1%

Twelve analysts still average a $170.20 target on Camtek, 68% above the close, while the COO hedged his own recovery timeline on the earnings call: "We're not sure about it." The record quarter is booked; the argument is whether it converts at improving margins.

Samsung's bonus pool could pay a memory engineer $560,000 as CXMT poaches Samsung's staff

Samsung's new uncapped bonus pool routes 10.5% of chip profit to employees fighting Chinese headhunters, just as CXMT's server DRAM timeline and a 10% share plunge ask whether the profits funding the defense will last.

FormFactor's record 54.7% gross margin included $8.6 million of tariff refunds that end after Q4

FormFactor's quarterly report shows 3.1 points of its record margin came from IEEPA tariff refunds that stop after the fourth quarter, while the new Texas plant's underutilization costs are headed into cost of revenues. Adjusted for the refund, the quarter sits at the guided level, not above it.
