Amazon's AI buildout tripled Generac's order book to $4.5 billion at half the margin of its home business
The Wisconsin home-generator maker's record quarter came with a data-center order book that tripled to about $4.5 billion in three months, most of it Amazon. The investment case is now whether that book converts at margins worth owning.

Generac+0.33% — Generac, up 0.33 percent today put a number on AI's appetite for backup power this morning: a data-center order book of about $4.5 billion, published with a record $1.29 billion quarter, up 16 percent. 1 That book stood at $1.6 billion in July, so it has close to tripled in three months. 5
The Amazon−0.17% — Amazon, down 0.17 percent today agreement we examined when it was disclosed on September 16 drove the jump 1. What is new today is the scale behind it, and the first evidence Generac can convert it at a profit: the company lifted the low end of its full-year margin forecast. 1
Hyperscalers are signing contracts years ahead
A hyperscale campus cannot run without banks of standby generators, and those machines are long-lead items, so buyers commit years in advance. Amazon's agreement runs to $8 billion of potential payments over its life, with $2.4 billion of initial deliveries already contracted for 2027 and 2028, on top of two earlier multi-year hyperscale agreements. 2614

Amazon also took a warrant on Generac shares that mostly vests only as those payments arrive, tying its upside to the deal actually being delivered. 2 The rally that followed the filing lifted the whole electrical-equipment complex, which is the market noticing where AI capital spending now lands. 7
The AI revenue earns half the home margin
The quarter shows the shift underway. Commercial and industrial sales rose 28 percent to $552 million on the data-center ramp, and that segment's margin climbed to 12.5 percent from 10.1. 1 Residential, still the bigger business at $743 million, earned 27 percent. 1 The growth revenue therefore arrives at roughly half the margin of the garage, while Caterpillar and Cummins expand their own data-center power capacity at segment margins near 25 percent. 5 The record quarter still landed slightly under Wall Street's revenue forecast. 3

The cash comes second
Generac is lifting capital spending to about 4.5 percent of sales, adding a second production line in Sussex, Wisconsin and packaging capacity in Illinois, and management says the payback on that capacity is under a year against the existing book. 4 The catch is timing. Accounts receivable rose by about $240 million in nine months, and the release's own risk factors flag cancellation rights in data-center contracts. 1 More than half the disclosed book rides on one customer's construction schedule.
The demand link in this chain is proven. The limiting link is conversion: whether the data-center mix pushes that 12.5 percent margin toward the high teens while the factories are being paid for. Watch that number rather than the quarterly print. Amazon is buying its uptime in Wisconsin years in advance; Generac's shareholders are financing the delivery.
