HSBC cut the stock to Reduce at $39 the next day 2. On October 22, Bernstein analyst Madison Rezaei did the sum from the other end: about $85 billion to fund the committed backlog, minus $9 billion of financing already in place, leaves roughly $76 billion still to raise 31.

What the filings admit

The backlog stood near $104 billion in June 3. Second-quarter revenue was $2.575 billion 1. Interest expense jumped from $267 million to $640 million in the quarter, on a $626 million net loss 3. Debt hit $51.6 billion at the end of June, up from $10.6 billion at the end of 2024, and capital spending has topped operating cash flow in all eight quarters since late 2024 6.

Two camps, one balance sheet

HSBC's Abhishek Shukla, whose bank sees 2028 to 2030 earnings 50 to 70% below consensus, puts average 2026 to 2030 returns on invested capital at 8.9%, below the cost of borrowing: "The more the company invests with this return profile, the more the value destruction" 21. Goldman's reply: "Not all neoclouds are created equal," citing GPU-backed loans and investment-grade customers such as Microsoft and Meta−0.67% — Meta, down 0.67 percent today 4. Chief executive Michael Intrator told staff the selloff was overdone, listing the levers as infrastructure borrowing, corporate debt, equity and customer prepayments 4.

The bond market had already voted

Goldman's upgrade lasted less than one session 1. The shares closed October 22 at $55.60, down 10% on the day and 36% this month 4. The 2031 and 2032 notes yield 15 to 16% 5, and the long-term debt rate passed 16% last week, far past the 8% line where junk territory starts 7.

The cost of insuring the debt against default hit a record 1,194.5 basis points on October 14 and 15 5. High-yield desks are pausing new deals until after the midterm elections 4, and rival Nebius just borrowed $3.5 billion twelve points cheaper, as The Inference reported. Thirty-two of 45 analysts still rate the stock a Buy 2.

What settles it

Third-quarter results land next month, consensus expects negative free cash flow of $10.1 billion in the quarter, and Baird's Rob Oliver forecasts about $30 billion of fresh capital needed in 2027 4. The tell is mechanical: the yield on the 2032 notes and the next financing announcement 145. A fall says Goldman was right and the fear was the trade; a rise says the $76 billion hole is real 1. Nvidia−0.19% — Nvidia, down 0.19 percent today, holding about 9% and backstopping unsold capacity through April 2032, is the rescuer nobody has called 45.

Microsoft's $41 billion capex quarter tops its $35.8 billion net income, and Maia is the bet

Microsoft's $41 billion quarterly capex bill now exceeds its quarterly net income, and most of it buys short-lived Nvidia chips. Maia, its own inference silicon arriving in 2027, is the bet to bend that cost curve before Wednesday's fiscal Q1 print.

Riot Platforms' $9.1 billion AI lease rests on a bridge loan expiring December 31

Riot Platforms signed the largest deal in its history in August, a 20-year AI lease worth about $9.1 billion at its Rockdale, Texas campus, but the build runs on a $573 million bridge loan that matures December 31, before a megawatt earns rent. The November 4 earnings call has to show the takeout financing, or explain who fills the gap.

Comfort Systems grew revenue 53.7%, backlog nearly doubled to $17.8 billion, and the stock fell

The contractor that cools and wires AI data centers grew revenue 54% and nearly doubled its backlog in a year, and the stock still fell. The filing shows what the market is arguing about: growth is arriving as estimate revisions and customer prepayments while gross margin sits still.

Backblaze's AI traffic hit a record while the stock fell 32% to $8.63; Q3 report due November 2

The company's own Q3 Network Stats, published October 22 and covered by no outlet, shows AI demand reaching the network while the shares have fallen about a third in twelve days. The Q3 print on November 2, guided to $44.4-44.8 million, is the first reading that can show demand parking as revenue.

Western Digital bets on denser drives, not more factories, as Toshiba doubles output

On its October 22 call the company pointed its capital at recording heads and disk media rather than factories, and its CFO gave price growth three or four more quarters. The density bet is durable; the scarcity premium is on a timer Toshiba started.

Super Micro's $4 Billion Beat Is Real Only If the Cash Shows Up on November 3
