Google DeepMind's Genie 4 ships unpriced, and the last launch cost Unity 24% in a day

DeepMind's new world model fixes the gaps Unity's CEO cited in January, yet ships as an unpriced research preview, so the milestone that would actually reprice the game engine trade is still ahead.

Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on October 27, a world model that generates playable 3D environments frame by frame in real time, now with native music, ambient sound and dialogue, plus characters that can be steered mid-scene by typing a prompt 34. It ships first as a research preview to trusted testers, with access to follow for Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie and for developers through the Gemini API 34.

There is no public date and no developer price. That unpriced gap is the story for gaming investors: the January-sized trigger for Unity's shares has not arrived yet 34.

The last launch cost Unity a quarter of its value in a day

When the consumer version of Genie 3, Google+1.45% — Google, up 1.45 percent today DeepMind's previous world model released in August 2025 at 720p and 24 frames per second, reached AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie on January 29, 2026, investors sold first and asked later 24. Unity, the game engine company, fell−1.01% — Unity, the game engine company, fell, down 1.01 percent today as much as 24% in one session 2. Roblox−2.77% — Roblox, down 2.77 percent today dropped between 12.8% and 13%, Take-Two Interactive−2.28% — Take-Two Interactive, down 2.28 percent today lost between 8% and 10.5%, CD Projekt fell 8.9% and Nintendo 4.79% 2.

Unity's CEO Matthew Bromberg pushed back within days: the frames are probabilistic, so nobody, player or developer, knows what happens next, which makes the output unsuitable on its own for games needing consistent, repeatable experiences. mBank analyst Piotr Poniatowski called the sell-off unjustified, and Unity, Roblox and Take-Two each clawed back at least 3% of the loss by the following Monday 2.

Genie 4 aims at exactly the gaps the skeptics named

Genie 4 holds a consistent scene for up to two minutes, double Genie 3's one-minute cap, with better physics for aerodynamics and collisions and more natural characters 34. Gemini 3.8 Flash, a fast Google AI model, acts as the director, breaking down goals and checking each generated frame to keep the world on track 34. It is still rationed: consumer access sits behind AI Ultra plans starting at $100 a month, and details still drift as simulations run 24.

Unity revenue has grown for six straight quarters to $546M

Unity, for context, is not a company bleeding out: revenue grew 23.9% year over year in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, to $546.5M, and the operating margin turned less negative at -5.9% 5.

The trigger to watch is a date and a price

The January verdict stands for now. World models remain premium, compute-hungry demos, not shippable game engines. What would change that verdict is a dated Genie 4 public release and a per-use API price, and neither exists 34. Size the trade on those milestones, not on demo days.
