Trane booked a $12.5 billion backlog, and the market still sold it
Trane Technologies beat estimates and raised its revenue guidance, yet the stock fell as much as 11% to a seven-month low. The gap between booked demand and booked margin is where the AI cooling trade now lives.

Trane Technologies−1.21% — Trane Technologies, down 1.21 percent today, the heating and cooling maker whose commercial HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems cool a growing share of the world's AI data centers, reported a very good quarter and the market punished it anyway: revenue up 18% to $6.76 billion, adjusted EPS up 25% to $4.86, full-year revenue guidance raised, and the stock still fell as much as 11% on October 29 to a seven-month low 12.

Both headline numbers landed within 2% of analyst estimates, so the selloff was not about the quarter that was reported 13. It was about guidance details disclosed on the earnings call: Trane cut how much price it expects to realize this year and cut its profit-leverage outlook 13.
The demand is real, and largely already sold
The boom is real. Data centers are pulling demand through commercial HVAC: organic bookings rose 20%, book-to-bill hit 107% (more orders came in than revenue went out), and backlog jumped 73% to $12.5 billion, with Americas commercial HVAC backlog up about 80% 12. Over $8 billion of that backlog is booked for 2027 and beyond 1. Revenue at this company is largely already sold.

What the market actually repriced
The margin is not. Trane cut its full-year price realization expectation, how much pricing adds to revenue growth, from 1.5 points to about 1 point, blaming timing and mix, and cut its organic leverage guidance, the profit added on each point of organic revenue growth, from 25%-plus to the low 20s, citing supply-chain and inflationary headwinds 1.
Adjusted operating margin slipped to 20.2% from 20.6% a year earlier even as Americas revenue rose 21% 23. The fourth-quarter outlook sat below estimates too: adjusted EPS of $3.40 to $3.50 including a $0.10 tax headwind, against roughly $3.73 analysts expected 13.

Thinner terms, and $3.4 billion to lock in supply
In plain terms: the demand Trane calls unprecedented is arriving at thinner terms, and management is buying supply resilience rather than holding price, agreeing to acquire Cancoil, one of its own coil suppliers, and deploying more than $3.4 billion of capital this year including $1.4 billion of buybacks 1.
The open variable for 2027 is the price the backlog converts at
So the open variable for 2027 is not revenue, it is the price that revenue is booked at 1. Fourth-quarter price is guided to accelerate back toward 1.5 points 1. Watch that line, and management's fireside chat at the Baird Global Industrial Conference on November 12, before deciding whether the leverage cut is a one-year wobble or the new cost of winning data-center work 14.
