Democrats won the midterms; CoreWeave's $4.4 billion of 2026 debt now waits on Texas

The election does not touch CoreWeave's signed contracts. It touches the megawatts still to energize this year and the $4.4 billion due before the backlog cash flows, and the bond market has been voting on that for weeks.

CoreWeave chief executive Michael Intrator at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, January 2026. The company's $4.4 billion of 2026 debt now faces a political variable its contracts never priced.

The vote landed on delivery, not contracts

Democrats took both chambers of Congress on November 3, and Texas elected Gina Hinojosa its first Democratic governor in more than 30 years, on a campaign that called for a temporary statewide pause on new data centers until lawmakers pass protections. 23 CoreWeave−9.80% — CoreWeave, down 9.80 percent today, one of the four leading neoclouds renting Nvidia−1.52% — Nvidia, down 1.52 percent today GPUs to AI developers, fell as much as 3.2 percent in premarket trading on November 4, and peers IREN−11.10% — IREN, down 11.10 percent today and Applied Digital−7.97% — Applied Digital, down 7.97 percent today slid beside it. 12 The repricing began weeks before the polls closed. 1

A third of the build sits in two states that flipped

Texas and Georgia together account for roughly a third of all AI data-center spending and projects, and both chose Democratic governors. 2 The friction predates the ballot: the project tracker Data Center Watch counted 45 data-center projects worth $68 billion disrupted by local opposition in the second quarter of 2026 alone. 2

Altimeter Capital's Brad Gerstner sized what could slip on the All-In Podcast: consensus expects 43 gigawatts of new US capacity to come online in 2027, against about 38 gigawatts of cumulative US capacity expected by the end of 2026, and he warned "at least 10 to 15 gigawatts of the expected build" may not come online. 1

The contracts are safe. The schedule is not.

None of it touches signed revenue. Ninety-eight percent of CoreWeave's contracts are take-or-pay, meaning customers pay whether or not they use the capacity, and the backlog stood near $104 billion at June 30, before more than $25 billion of additional commitments announced early in the third quarter. 45

What the vote can touch is the delivery behind the backlog. Full-year 2026 capex guidance of $35 to $39 billion buys roughly one gigawatt, and 650 megawatts came online in the first half, leaving about 350 megawatts to energize after the election, under a political map drawn overnight. 4 The obligations do not wait: $35.6 billion of debt principal at June 30, and $640 million of net interest in a single quarter, roughly a quarter of revenue. 56

The credit market moved first

CoreWeave's June unsecured bonds traded at 76.5 to 81 cents on the dollar in mid-October, yielding above 15 percent, and the five-year default swap hit a record 1,194.5 basis points, a market-implied five-year default probability above 60 percent. 789 About $4.4 billion of debt comes due by the end of 2026, $6.2 billion more in 2027. 89 In September, when the interest bill was first tallied here, the swaps priced roughly a coin flip and the stock traded at $87.59; both marks have since given way. 10

The bills compound: capex up sixfold, debt up fivefold in two years

The bull case, and the gap it leaves

Morningstar still rates CoreWeave four stars with a $108 fair value, guesses the bond-market panic has had minimal effect on the company's ability to borrow, and expects take-or-pay bookings from Microsoft+6.59% — Microsoft, up 6.59 percent today, OpenAI$1.18T — OpenAI, private, latest valuation $1.18T and Meta+1.57% — Meta, up 1.57 percent today to keep revenue scaling. 4 Nvidia has agreed to buy unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 2032, a genuine floor. 9 Some market commentators called the election fear overblown, noting that many Republicans also campaigned on tighter permitting. 3

None of that pays the $4.4 billion due before the backlog cash flows: a take-or-pay contract protects revenue if the customer holds, not a delivery schedule that just acquired a political variable.

November 10 is the first reading on the new map

CoreWeave reports third-quarter results on November 10, its first disclosure since the vote. 4 Three numbers decide the next month: megawatts energized in the second half against the roughly 350 implied, whether incremental commitments keep landing on take-or-pay terms, and whether year-end maturities refinance at anything near the coupons the company has been paying 4. The backlog is contracted for years. The coupons are due in weeks.

Riot signed a $28 billion, 15-year Texas lease as Cipher's odds of signing one were halved after the vote

The edge-computing maker beat, raised guidance twice and opened a $50 million at-the-market program in the same week. At a $122.68 million market cap, that facility is now about 41% of the company, and retail sentiment has not noticed.

Cipher's first quarter booking HPC rent produced $27 million of revenue and negative $10 million of adjusted EBITDA, against $16.6 billion of contracted leases and $6.7 billion of debt. Analysts cut their targets on November 3 and kept calling the shares undervalued; both halves are right.

WhiteFiber's $865 million lease is signed; delivering it is what the market doubts

WhiteFiber closed a $60 million land purchase the same week it admitted switchgear problems have delayed billing at its first North Carolina data hall and its project financing still is not signed. The $865 million lease proves the demand; the open question is delivery.

S&P priced Meta's $15 billion notes at 220 basis points, nearly twice April's, amid AI debt it cannot see

S&P stamped Meta's new AA- notes days after warning that $71 billion of projected cash deficits lie ahead, while its own infrastructure chief says the AI debt behind the buildout exceeds what the agency can see. The unrated layer beneath the letters, Jane Street's $19 billion of compute commitments, has already cracked first.
