Uber counted four AI-agent rides in a week of 320 million trips

Uber's earnings call put the second hard count on AI-agent commerce: four rides and about 500 delivery orders in a 320-million-trip week, six days after DoorDash's near-zero tally, and while Meta plans a fee on every purchase its Muse agent completes.

Agents booked four rides out of 320 million trips

Uber+4.73% — Uber, up 4.73 percent today gave the market its second hard count of AI-agent commerce on Wednesday. In the Halloween week, the ride and delivery platform handled roughly 320 million trips; agents built by other companies booked four rides and about 500 Uber Eats orders among them, one agent order for every 640,000 trips 12.

"It's very, very early and very limited traction," finance chief Balaji Krishnamurthy told analysts on the November 4 call 1. DoorDash+7.76% — DoorDash, up 7.76 percent today (DASH) counted first, six days earlier, when chief executive Tony Xu said outside agents had placed "several hundred" orders in total against 993 million orders in the quarter 3.

Meta is pricing a toll on purchases that have not arrived

The builders on the other side are pricing tolls anyway. Meta+1.85% — Meta, up 1.85 percent today (META) chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said at Meta Connect on September 23 that Meta expects to profit by taking a small fee from each transaction its Muse agent completes 3.

Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, signed up more than 10 million people in about six weeks; more than a quarter of its engaged users shop with it, averaging over $200 a purchase, and the payments processor Stripe had to raise credit limits to keep up 4. Citi+1.69% — Citi, up 1.69 percent today pegs Muse's eventual revenue near $27 billion 5. Meta is building a toll booth on a road that, this week, carried four Uber rides.

Uber's demand is real money, and the market paid for it

Uber's own quarter explains the shrug. Gross bookings hit $59.8 billion, up 20% on a constant-currency basis, a fifth straight quarter above that pace, and the stock rose more than 5% even though the fourth-quarter profit guide of $0.95 to $0.99 a share sat below Wall Street's $1.06 6. Investors are paying for the demand Uber controls, which is exactly what a per-purchase agent toll threatens.

The agent shopping runs on someone else's rails

Muse commerce moves through Stripe, Shop Pay and PayPal+3.09% — PayPal, up 3.09 percent as of its last quote, and Amazon has blocked the agent outright 7; when it reached Pizza Hut, trade publication Restaurant Business watched it browse, order and pay unaided 1. Uber's answer is speed inside its own walls: the median reorder takes 90 seconds 1, 75% of rides start with a single tap and the average booking takes 50 seconds, and Uber is negotiating admission terms with several AI providers while avoiding the platform dependency that hollowed out travel booking 8. It is also building its own agents 1.

Gravity says wait; 1994 says watch

The strongest counterpoint belongs to Xu: "you never want to fight gravity. But at the same time, you don't want to be delusional" 3. DoorDash switched on its agent connector only weeks before the call, for a handful of early beta partners, mostly corporate lunches 9.

Pizza Hut took its first online order in 1994, and more than half its orders are online now 9. Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi matched the posture: "we hope that there will be more traction," he said, "we will work with these third parties" 1. DoorDash also paid $17 billion for Instacart the same week, a bet that people keep ordering inside an app 3.

The next count is already scheduled

DoorDash updates its tally with fourth-quarter results early next year 3, and Uber's next call gives four rides a baseline. Uber's measurable AI bet sits elsewhere, 700 fully driverless vehicles targeted by year-end 8. The agent channel gets measured one quarter at a time.
